A 45-year-old volunteer for Back to God Ministries International in the Central African Republic was murdered recently as he was walking home from the high school where he was employed as a teacher.

According to family members, Peter (not his real name) was unaware that rebels who control Bangui, the capitol city of Central African Republic, had surrounded his neighborhood in search of guns and other arms.

Although Peter was carrying no weapons, rebels suddenly approached and shot and killed him. His family later discovered Peter’s body riddled with bullets.

The murder is a deep loss, not only for Peter’s family and the Christian community in Bangui, but also for Perspective Réformées, Back to God Ministries French outreach in Africa.

Peter joined the Bangui ministry team in 2011 to serve as a volunteer to mentor Bible study correspondent students.

“Since he discovered Perspective Réformées, Peter has been a great helper for the ministry,” commented Rev. Paul Mpindi, BTGMI French ministry leader. “This is so tragic.”

Rev. Mpindi and his wife, Charlotte, are very much aware of the danger in this area.

The couple was caught in rebel coup during a ministry visit in March 2013. They had planned to lead a prayer seminar when rebels advanced on and entered Bangui.

They were able to safely exit the city and then returned to Africa later this summer to attend the graduation of Bible students at another location.

“Peter did not argue with the rebels. His only mistake was to walk in the street while the rebels were there,” said Mpindi.

Peter leaves behind a widow and four children. BTGMI staff and several Bible correspondence students helped provide funds for the burial and other needs the family faces.

Prayers are requested for Peter’s family, students he worked with in the Bible study program, and for the staff in Bangui who are grieving his senseless death.

BTGMI also asked for people to pray for peace and justice, as well as the safety of all those affected by the rebel takeover in Central African Republic.
