Building Momentum
Momentum, Christian Reformed World Mission’s newest program, is bringing together two of the CRC’s greatest assets—mature believers who have a heart for discipleship and young adults who enjoy hands-on, service-based ministry and learning.
Momentum is a year-long discipleship program in which teams of young adults and mentors meet monthly for local community service projects and devotional reflections. The final month of the program culminates with an international service project.
“We want young people to live out their faith by learning about their calling, serving locally, and grasping a vision for how God is working in the world outside of North America,” said Brian Kingshott, youth engagement specialist for CRWM.
So far, six students from Calvin CRC in Muskegon, Mich., where Kingshott also serves as youth director, have taken part in Momentum. Until now it has been a pilot program, but now it is opening to the wider CRC.
“We are looking for mature believers in the church who are interested in sharing life with young adults for a year to help them transition into their young adult years,” said Kingshott.
“We are also looking for students who are seeking tangible ways to connect with and learn about themselves through community with others, serving locally, as well as serving globally.”
Evan Lane, one of the program’s first participants, had never been out of the country before, or even on an airplane.
As part of the program, he served for one month in Romania serving alongside CRWM missionaries Jack and Kelly Organ.
“Every meeting we had paved a road to success,” said Lane. “I definitely feel that I am much closer to God than I have ever been in my life.
“I really felt God with me the entire time and he’s growing stronger inside me every day. It was truly a life-changing experience and I will never forget it.”
