Canadian Government to Match Donations for Syrian Refugee Crisis
World Renew
The Canadian government has announced it will match all donations from Canadians for the Syrian crisis response dollar-for-dollar through its new Syria Emergency Relief Fund.
For the last several years, millions of Syrians have been escaping their country as civil war between various factions rages.
Donations eligible for the match to help refugees must be given to World Renew or another registered Canadian charity that is responding to the Syrian crisis.
World Renew has been responding to the crisis in Syria for more than three years and has already provided more than $7.5 million in food and other assistance to people in need.
“From Beirut to Mosul, from Amman to Aleppo, an entire geographic region has been torn apart by war. Millions of people have been forced from their homes and are now struggling just to survive,” said Ida Kaastra-Mutoigo, World Renew’s Canadian Director.
“World Renew has been blessed to be able to bear witness to the love of Christ in the midst of this crisis by providing food, blankets, shelter and other essential assistance when and where it was most needed.
“I hope that these match funds from the Canadian government will encourage even more people to give so that this important ministry can continue.”
The Canadian government will put aside $1 for every $1 raised from qualifying Canadian organizations for the Syria crisis response between Sept.12 and Dec. 31, 2015. It will later disperse these funds to various organizations that are responding.
While gifts from people outside of Canada do not qualify for the match, they are still vital to World Renew’s response to the conflict in Syria.
