Reconstruction in the Wake of Cyclone Yemyin, Pakistan

In July 2007 when Cyclone Yemyin resulted in severe flooding which destroyed houses and crops in Pakistan CRWRC was there to assist.  While Pakistan was not a country where CRWRC had community development projects, a relief project was initiated to respond to the urgent need presented by this natural disaster.  CRWRC partnered with Interfaith League Against Poverty (I-LAP) to assisted 16,000 beneficiaries during a three month project.

There was an immediate need for food, given the destroyed crops, and also a clear need for debris clearing and reconstruction.  Therefore the project consisted of both a food distribution and a food-for-work system.  The food-for-work element of the project helped people remove rubble, retrieve their valuables, and prepare land for the reconstruction of their homes.

Working with 2,000 families in flood affected regions the project enabled the communities affected by Cyclone Yemyin to address the immediate situation while earning their food supplements.

To support the work of the Interfaith League Against Poverty an International Relief Manager
(IRM), Fred Knip, travelled to Pakistan to work with the partner organization.  To read more about Fred's experience click here.
