Christian Faith 101

Dr. Robert Heerspink
Grandville, Michigan

When I attended college, the introductory class in any subject was numbered 101. Such classes typically were filled with freshmen and sophomores exploring possible majors and completing core requirements for graduation. You knew you were laying the foundation when you took classes labeled 101.

This month’s devotions are titled “Christian Faith 101” to show that, in many ways, the teachings here are foundational to the Christian faith. For some of us, this will be our first introduction to faith in Christ. For others, it will be like a refresher course in what we believe—and I pray that it will yield new insights.

What should guide our study? There’s a wonderful summary of the Christian faith called the Apostles’ Creed (see next page). It’s a faithful summary of what the Bible teaches, and it has been a key confession of the church for many centuries.

This creed contains little more than a hundred words, and yet the richness of its full meaning would take more than a lifetime of study. This month, let’s make a small beginning.

Dr. Robert Heerspink is director of Back to God Ministries International and a regular speaker on the weekly Back to God Hour radio program. He has also served four churches in Michigan and has authored resources on financial stewardship for Faith Alive Christian Resources and the Barnabas Foundation. Bob and his wife, Edie, have three children.
