Justice Prayers - March 26, 2025

March 26, 2025

In my trials, Lord, walk with me.

In my trials, Lord, walk with me.

When my heart is almost breaking,

Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

I Want Jesus to Walk With Me (An African American Spiritual)

Khartoum, Sudan

Khartoum, Sudan, remains a battleground between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have been fighting since April 2023. Recently, the SAF killed hundreds of paramilitary trapped inside of the Republican Palace in Khartoum -  formerly a glorious structure that entertained the world’s dignitaries, now reduced to rubble. International efforts to end the conflict have collapsed, and Sudan’s military chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, recently stated he prefers to fight rather than negotiate. What began as a feud between rival generals has engulfed the entire country, causing epic suffering. The war has displaced 12 million people, killed tens of thousands, and triggered the world’s worst famine in decades, according to the United Nations. Both sides face accusations of atrocities, while the humanitarian crisis deepens with limited international aid.

Lord of peace, we lift Sudan before You. We grieve the loss of life and devastation. Forgive us for believing peace is impossible.  Bring an end to violence we pray. Stir the world’s compassion to respond with aid and advocacy. May peace be restored to Khartoum and all of Sudan. We pray for your mercy, Amen.

Turkey

Turkey is technically a democracy, but under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s two-decade rule, it has grown increasingly authoritarian. Erdoğan has consolidated power by controlling the media, weakening the judiciary, and suppressing political rivals - most recently, through the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on questionable charges. This move is widely seen as an attempt to eliminate opposition before the 2028 election.  It mirrors how democratically elected leaders can erode democracy from within. Similar tactics of discrediting opponents, restricting media, and undermining independent institutions, are threatening democratic systems worldwide, where concerns about the concentration of power, vilifying of opponents, and weakening of democratic norms, are growing.

Sovereign Lord, we intercede for nations under growing authoritarian rule, especially Turkey. Uphold justice and righteousness and protect those who stand for truth and freedom. Thwart intentions that are inclined toward oppression and guide leaders toward humility and service. Empower citizens to desire, seek, and uphold democratic values. In Your holy name, Amen.

The War In Ukraine

The United States is increasing mediation efforts between Ukraine and Russia. Assembling in Saudi Arabia,  US officials have engaged in talks with Ukrainian and Russian delegates in separate meetings. U.S. officials suggest Putin may be open to ending the conflict, focusing on a Black Sea ceasefire to allow grain shipments. Russia wants recognition of its annexed territories and a halt to Ukraine's NATO ambitions, while Ukraine demands a full Russian withdrawal. Despite diplomatic efforts, opposing positions present significant challenges to achieving a mutually acceptable ceasefire agreement.

Lord of the earth, we dare to pray that mediation can be possible. We pray for an end to the war in Ukraine.  Lord, in your mercy, provide a way to end the violence and devastation - please provide a way. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Becoming (part of) the Answer to our Own Prayers

Abuse Awareness Sunday is April 27

Every year, the Christian Reformed Church sets aside one Sunday in the year to acknowledge and recognize the painful reality of abuse. It is an opportunity to lament and grieve with those who have been harmed by abuse in any form, to commit again to doing what we as a Christian community can do to prevent abuse, and to inspire congregations to address abuse in ways that seek justice and healing for all those who have been impacted.
