A Christmas celebration in northern India

This year’s Christmas pageants in northern India (we cannot identify the specific cities) included several Hindus and Muslims, not only in the audience—but also in re-enactments of the story of Christ’s birth.

“The celebration of Christmas has special enthusiasm among the non-Christian communities, particularly Hindus,” reports the Back to God Ministries Hindi ministry leader. “Reenacting the nativity scene is an effective way to convey the story of Jesus’ birth. The special interest shown by several recent converts opens up doors for reaching many other people. The event that took place more than 2,000 years ago still has relevance today!”

With a distinctive Indian flavor to the story portrayed in one location, the wise men were portrayed by Indian sages. The narrator was a Muslim convert, who recited the Luke’s Gospel account by memory. And participants in the performance were Hindu converts.

In another pageant at a school for visually impaired, a young boy, formally a Muslim, recited the story by memory for his classmates, many of whom are Hindu or Muslims.

“It was eye-opening even for us to see the non-Christians participate in presenting the story of Jesus’ birth,” adds the BTGMI ministry leader. “This does not mean that we can immediately see the fruit of people confessing they accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and King. But the message was strong and clear for the mixed audience.”

In yet another opportunity, BTGMI Hindi staff presented the Christmas message to businessmen during a get-together organized by a group that leases office in BTGMI’s building.

“We trust that the Spirit of the Lord works silently and someday we will see the fruit of our labor,” says the Hindi ministry leader.
