CRC Agencies Join to Help Nigeria
Christian Reformed World Missions and the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee have launched a joint relief and reconciliation effort following the violence that broke out in Jos, Nigeria, last month. More than 300 people were killed and over 25,000 people were displaced.
Numerous homes and businesses were also destroyed in the outbreak of violence.
Both CRWM and CRWRC have staff working in Nigeria. Thankfully, says a news release, all of the staff is safe.
Hillcrest School, which Christian Reformed World Missions has helped to support in various ways, including through partner missionaries, was closed in the wake of the violence. But the school was able to resume classes on Feb.1.
CRWRC will handle the funds that are donated to help in this joint relief and reconciliation effort. To donate online, visit CRWRC's Online Giving site and designate your gift for "Disaster, Nigeria Unrest 2010."
Violence broke out in Jos during the afternoon on Sunday, Jan. 17. The violence was contained in one particular area of Jos throughout Sunday evening and Monday, but on Tuesday morning, Jan. 19, the violence spread to several areas of Jos and to some of the neighboring towns.
At that time, smoke could be seen throughout the city and frequent gunfire was heard until late afternoon on Tuesday.
Nigerian military and security forces brought the situation under control. By Tuesday evening calm was restored and that calm has continued.
A 24-hour curfew that had been declared has been relaxed. A 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew is currently in effect.
Although the situation is still tense, most people have returned to their normal activities.
The CRC thanks everyone who prayed for an end to the violence. Now, the CRC asks that people pray for lasting peace in Jos. Pray also for those families who have lost loved ones, homes, or businesses during the crisis.
