Resources to Mark 9/11

September 7, 2016

This Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people and injured hundreds of others in three locations across the United States.

The first alQaeda attack occurred when two planes, driven by terrorists, slammed into and destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City.

The other attack took place when a plane hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the third involved a plane, presumably bound for the White House, that crashlanded in a farm field in Pennsylvania.

With the grim anniversary of 9/11 in mind, the Christian Reformed Church’s Worship Ministries is offering churches a range of resources they can use in services this weekend to “help us come to God with both lament and trust.”

For instance, churches are invited to use “A Prayer Litany for 9/11” based on Psalm 13, written by Rev. Mary B. Stegink of Ridgewood CRC in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

The prayer litany begins:

All: How long, O Lord? Will you forget us forever?

Leader: Lord, today we remember a day when everything changed. We remember a beautiful autumn day forever marred by smoke, chaos, death, and confusion.

Other resources that can be used include hymns and prayers taken from Lift Up Your Hearts and Psalms for All Seasons.
