Synod 2022 Highlights
Synod 2022 began with a convening session on May 25. On June 10, delegates gathered on the campus of Calvin University to begin in-person deliberations. On the agenda were three years’ worth of discussion materials, including weighty matters related to human sexuality and organizational restructuring. Here are a few highlights:
- Election of officers
- State of the Church address
- Statement from the Council of Delegates
- Debate on requirements for ministerial candidates
- Relaxation of rules for delegates to synod
- Strengthening the abuse-response process
- Approval of two professors to join the Calvin Theological Seminary faculty (Dr. Wilson Cunha and Dr. Yudha Thianto)
- Navigating the CRCNA’s relationship with the RCA
- Celebrating new candidates for ministry
- Commemorating 25 years of women in ordained ministry
- Hearing from ecumenical guests
- Worshiping together
- Affirmation of penal substitutionary atonement
- Discussing human sexuality

Synod will continue until Thursday, June 16. Still to be discussed are additional matters related to human sexuality, overtures related to the actions of Neland Ave. CRC of Grand Rapids, Mich., when it ordained a deacon living in a same-sex marriage, and matters related to organizational restructuring.
