World Renew is responding after Hurricane Matthew left a path of destruction and heartbreak across the Caribbean, especially in Haiti, and along the southeast coast of the United States.
The huge, slow-moving storm caused massive flooding that killed more than 1,000 people, forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee for their lives, and left countless homes in ruin.
In the United States, coastal communities in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina were hardest hit. Search and rescue teams have been working to find missing and stranded residents, and are providing emergency food, water, and shelter to those who need immediate assistance after the storm.
World Renew Disaster Response Services (DRS) is currently connecting with local and national disaster response partners to coordinate recovery efforts. World Renew’s early response coordinators will be meeting with communities to set the stage for the organization’s long-term response. This includes clean-up services, unmet needs assessments, home reconstruction, and other recovery services. About 27 people were killed in the U.S. by the storm, many due to flooding.
Meanwhile, World Renew is also responding to extensive damage from Hurricane Matthew which made a direct hit on the southwest corner Haiti on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016., killing hundreds of people.
World Renew staff on the ground in Leogane and Duchity are assessing the needs of those who were affected and are determining how resources can best be used to provide emergency aid.
World Renew is working with Integral Alliance members and local partners in Haiti to begin to help communities with food, water, and shelter in the short term. It will continue with transitional projects that will help community members work their way into long-term development programs down the road.
